👋🏻 Hey, Sid here!
Welcome to another edition of Datadino Storytelling!
This week I share a simple yet overlooked tip. Rotate the bar chart.
So, let’s jump straight in.
When you are in a business setting, leaders want to get to takeaways quickly. They don’t want to spend hours reading your chart.
For example, take the chart below. It shows you the customer satisfaction score for 11 companies. Try reading the company names. Isn’t it hard?
Did you have to turn your neck?
Don’t make it so difficult. Tilt your labels instead.
Better still, rotate the chart itself. This makes it much easier.
Now, let’s take another example from Vox.
The chart below shows you the difference in age between men & women in leading roles in Hollywood.
It’s trying to highlight the discrimination that women face in Hollywood based on age.
Now if you were to make one small change and rotate the chart, isn’t it more effective?
More people understand the message & it reaches a wider audience.
So that was one small actionable tip for this week. I hope you found it insightful.
Ciao, until next week!
